Japan Committee for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF becomes first to pass $100-million mark<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

A record-setting contribution<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

NEW YORK, 9 June 2004 – In a record-setting contribution, the Japan Committee for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF has donated more than $100 million to the children’s agency, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF said today.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“With this unsurpassed contribution, the people of Japan have displayed extraordinary generosity and awareness of the challenges faced by the world’s children,” Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy said, accepting the donation from Mr. Yoshihisa Togo, Executive Director of the Japan Committee, at a private ceremony at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF headquarters.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The Japan Committee is the first of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF’s 37 national committees to generate more than the $100 million mark in a single year. The donation represents fundraising contributions made in 2003 in Japan by individuals, foundations, schools, corporations and not-for-profit organizations.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF is supported entirely by voluntary contributions from the private sector and governments. For millions of people in the industrialized world, the face of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF is well-known thanks to the dedicated work of the 37 National Committees for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF. They oversee fundraising efforts in each of their respective countries and play a significant role in advocacy efforts.<\/p><\/div>\n

Bellamy commended Mr. Togo for sustaining successful advocacy and fundraising activities for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF in Japan, which has led to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF being one of the best known not-for-profit organizations in the country. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The committee’s contribution to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF has increased dramatically over the last ten years, with annual increases of 10 to 15 per cent.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In addition to raising awareness of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵICEF’s work on behalf of children around the world, the Japan Committee has for the last decade also focused on child protection issues. The committee conducted national campaigns against the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, the Use of Child Soldiers and Child Trafficking. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

“With these effective campaigns, the Japan Committee has significantly changed the public perception in Japan regarding child rights,” Bellamy said. “By brilliantly combining fundraising with advocacy work, the Japan Committee has done extraordinary work enlisting the Japanese people into the important mission of giving children everywhere a better life.”  <\/p><\/div>\n
