We are delighted by the appointment of Filippo Grandi as the new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It is great news for refugees worldwide. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA colleagues wish Filippo and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHCR every success.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

It is also great news for Palestine refugees to have someone in this position who understands their plight so well. Filippo’s legacy at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA lives on. We are now stronger than we have been in many years as we continue to make the Agency even more effective in serving and advocating for this increasingly marginalized population.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

BACKGROÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵD INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions, and financial support has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, deepening poverty and conflict. As a result, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA General Fund, which supports core essential services and most staffing costs, operates with a large deficit. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large deficits, are funded through separate funding portals. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just solution to their plight. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.<\/p><\/div>\n
