The\u00a0<\/span>Commissioner-General\u00a0<\/span>of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees\u00a0<\/span>in the Near East\u00a0<\/span>(Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/span>)<\/span>, Philippe Lazzarini,<\/span>\u00a0welcomed the renewal of his mandate by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General, saying he was \u201c<\/span>honoured<\/span>\u201d by the decision.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This is Lazzarini\u2019s second\u00a0<\/span>three-<\/span>year<\/span>\u00a0term\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>one of the largest Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ agencies in the world.\u00a0<\/span>With<\/span>\u00a028,000 staff member<\/span>s<\/span>, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/span>\u00a0deliver<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>critical<\/span>\u00a0services<\/span>\u00a0including<\/span>\u00a0health, education, social protection, camp infrastructure and\u00a0<\/span>sanitation<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0among\u00a0<\/span>other<\/span>s<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0to millions of Palestine refugees<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The Agency\u00a0<\/span>operates<\/span>\u00a0in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Gaza, Syria,\u00a0<\/span>Lebanon<\/span>\u00a0and Jordan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI am\u00a0<\/span>honoured<\/span>\u00a0by the<\/span>\u00a0decision<\/span>\u00a0of Secretary-General Guterres<\/span>\u00a0and his\u00a0<\/span>confidence in me<\/span>\u00a0at a time of immense challenges in the region<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Lazzarini said.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I also am grateful for the support<\/span>\u00a0expressed by<\/span>\u00a0the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ<\/span>\u00a0Member States<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the host countries<\/span>\u00a0in the region, and\u00a0<\/span>our donors and partners.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As he starts his second term, Lazzarini<\/span>\u00a0pledged to keep working tirelessly\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0continued access of Palestine refugees to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA services per the Agency\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>mandate and<\/span>\u00a0reinforce<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>trust of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>international community in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/span>. He is committed to improving and modernizing the quality of the services, including through\u00a0<\/span>digitalization<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI look forward to continuing to work with\u00a0<\/span>my<\/span>\u00a0dedicated<\/span>\u00a0colleagues<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0most of whom are Palestine refugees,<\/span>\u00a0so we can\u00a0<\/span>face\u00a0<\/span>and overcome\u00a0<\/span>challenges together<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said the Commissioner-General<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>At the\u00a0<\/span>centre<\/span>\u00a0of all our efforts are the rights of Palestine refugees, until there is a just and lasting solution to their plight.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
