Tuesday\u2019s annual observance marking the official creation of the United Nations was overshadowed by the rising toll of suffering and sacrifice in Gaza, where 35 staff members with Palestine refugee agency Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA have now lost their lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Day<\/a> on 24 October marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter<\/a> \u2013 the day the Organization officially came into being.<\/p>\n

\u2018We grieve, and we remember\u2019<\/h3>\n

The dead in Gaza include many teachers, the agency noted in a tweet on Monday. \u201cWe grieve and we remember. These are not just numbers. These are our friends and colleagues\u2026Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA mourns this huge loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 13,000-strong agency which operates across the Palestine Occupied Territory has been working tirelessly with other Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ humanitarians inside Gaza and across the region, to aid stricken civilians, often at great personal risk.<\/p>\n

Determined to forge peace<\/h3>\n

Through the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter, countries united in their resolve to \u201csave succeeding generations from the scourge of war.\u201d<\/p>\n

Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a> recalled<\/a> that the Charter \u201cis rooted in a determination\u201d to build peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn this United Nations Day, let us commit with hope and determination to build the better world of our aspirations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Call for unity<\/h3>\n

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief called on all nations to commit to a future that lives up to the name of the indispensable organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a divided world. We can and must be united nations,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n

Commemorative events planned on Tuesday include a concert<\/a> at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters in New York, on the theme of The Frontlines of Climate Action, reinforcing one of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief\u2019s key priorities, ahead of the crucial COP28 summit in Dubai next month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
