The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General on Wednesday\u00a0firmly rebuked\u00a0<\/a>what he described as the \u201cfalse\u201d claim by top Israeli diplomats that he had sought to justify the terror attacks of 7 October by Hamas in a speech he delivered to the Security Council.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Addressing Tuesday\u2019s debate<\/a>\u00a0in the Council on the worsening crisis in Israel and Palestine, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief said that although nothing could justify the \u201cappalling\u201d attacks by Hamas of 7 October which triggered the siege and bombardment of Gaza, it was important to recognize they \u201cdid not happen in a vacuum\u201d and did not justify the collective punishment of Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Following\u00a0Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>\u2019 briefing on Tuesday, Israel\u2019s ambassador to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Gilad Erdan tweeted that, in effect, Mr. Guterres’s speech had sought to justify Hamas’s brutal assault which left some 1,400 dead, mainly civilians.<\/p>\n

Resignation demand<\/strong><\/h3>\n

He demanded that the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief resign, and later said that Israel would now withhold visas from Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s foreign minister Eli Cohen also accused Mr. Guterres of justifying terrorism and cancelled a planned bilateral meeting with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Later on Tuesday the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief met some of the families of those taken hostage by Hamas fighters and reaffirmed his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all those being held in violation of international law inside Gaza.<\/p>\n

Shocked at misrepresentation<\/h3>\n

In a statement to correspondents at the stakeout outside the\u00a0Security Council<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday morning, Mr. Guterres said he was \u201cshocked by the misrepresentation by some of my statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Acknowledging that he had indeed spoken of Palestinian grievances, he stressed he had also said in the Council that \u201cthe grievances of the Palestinian people cannot justify the appalling attacks by Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without referring to Israeli diplomats specifically, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief said it was \u201cnecessary to set the record straight \u2013 especially out of respect to the victims and to their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
