Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (<\/span>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>joins<\/span>\u00a0the global call for an end to gender-based violence under the\u00a0<\/span>United Nations<\/span>\u00a0Secretary-General\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>2023\u00a0<\/span>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵiTE<\/span>\u00a0campaign:<\/span>\u00a0Invest\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>Prevent<\/span>\u00a0Violence against Women and Girls.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Amidst the ongoing crisis in Gaza, with potential long-term consequences\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0women and girls, the Agency is resolute in\u00a0<\/span>standing against all forms of<\/span>\u00a0Gender-Based Violence (GBV)<\/span>\u00a0while marking this year\u2019s 16 Days of Activism<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Our commitment to ending violence\u00a0<\/span>remains<\/span>\u00a0unwavering as we\u00a0<\/span>come together during\u00a0<\/span>these\u00a0<\/span>difficult times<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>organise initiatives<\/span>\u00a0across the West Bank, including East Jerusalem<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as well as in<\/span>\u00a0Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0These events\u00a0<\/span>aim<\/span>\u00a0to raise awareness on the<\/span>\u00a0different forms of violence experienced\u00a0<\/span>disproportionately\u00a0<\/span>by women and girls<\/span>\u00a0and mobili<\/span>s<\/span>e civil society\u00a0<\/span>to take<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>leading<\/span>\u00a0role<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Given the\u00a0<\/span>current\u00a0<\/span>war<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>activities\u00a0<\/span>in Gaza\u00a0<\/span>will focus<\/span>\u00a0on emergency response initiatives tailored to address pressing needs\u00a0<\/span>identified<\/span>\u00a0in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Rapid Gender Analysis<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0Simultaneously, in the West Bank, where the Gaza\u00a0<\/span>war<\/span>\u00a0reverberates within the Palestine Refugee community,<\/span>\u00a0activities will\u00a0<\/span>centre around\u00a0<\/span>collaborating with the community and civil society to eradicate GBV<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In Jordan, schools and community centr<\/span>e<\/span>s are set to host<\/span>\u00a0GBV<\/span>\u00a0activists<\/span>\u00a0to foster discussions a<\/span>round\u00a0<\/span>women’s empowerment. In Syria,\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0emphasis will be on\u00a0<\/span>raising awareness<\/span>\u00a0and conducting focus group discussions\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>GBV. Meanwhile, in Lebanon, local organi<\/span>z<\/span>ations championing women’s and girls’ rights within the nine largest camps will unite in a march under the rallying cry, “<\/span><\/span>\u0627\u062a\u062d\u062f\u0648\u0627 \u0636\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0646\u0641<\/span>\u00a0#Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵITE Against Violence.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Head of Gender, Amrita\u00a0<\/span>Kapur<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>emphasizes that\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>n times of conflict, w<\/span>omen and girls face heightened risks of gender-based violence<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>The i<\/span>ncrease in GBV can be\u00a0<\/span>attributed<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>f<\/span>orced displacement<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>lack of access<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>health<\/span>\u00a0care and<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>community services<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is preparing tailored response efforts, incorporating internal staff training on GBV with a specialized focus on a survivor-<\/span>cent<\/span>re<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0approach, psychosocial support<\/span>\u00a0and addressing\u00a0<\/span>social norms<\/span>\u00a0and gender bias.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Six weeks into the war in Gaza, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is sheltering over one million internally displaced people in its schools and premises throughout Gaza. These shelters are hopelessly overcrowded, and the conditions are appalling, lacking the bare minimum of hygiene and privacy. This situation has deeply gendered impacts and particularly affects women and girls,\u201d says Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini. \u201cWe must work together to ensure that incoming aid promptly and effectively addresses their unique needs.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/a>\u00a0is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly established Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA in 1949 with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees in the Agency\u2019s area of operations pending a just and lasting solution to their plight.<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA operates in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, The Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.<\/p>\n

Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 conflict continue to be displaced and in need of support, nearly 75 years on.<\/p>\n
