The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres:<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General was deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the death of a United Nations Office for Project Services\u00a0(Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOPS) staff member, when two Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ guesthouses in Deir al Balah were hit in strikes.\u00a0 Five other Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ personnel were seriously injured.<\/p>\n

The locations of all Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ premises are known to the parties to the conflict, who are bound by international law to protect them and maintain their absolute inviolability.<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General strongly condemns all attacks on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ personnel and calls for a full investigation. \u00a0He underscores that all conflicts must be conducted in a way that ensures civilians are respected and protected.<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General sends his deepest condolences to the family of the staff member killed.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s deadly strike brings the number of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ colleagues killed in Gaza since 7\u00a0October\u00a02023 to at least\u00a0280.<\/p>\n

The incident follows reports from yesterday \u2014 which saw the deaths of hundreds, including many children \u2014 marking one of the deadliest days in Gaza since late\u00a02023.<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General stresses the need for the ceasefire to be respected to bring an end to the suffering of the people. \u00a0Humanitarian aid must reach all people in need. \u00a0The hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally.<\/p>\n
