More gates and checkpoints, coupled with widespread job losses and ongoing delays in public wage payments, which are only partially covered by the Palestinian Authority due to its financial crisis in the absence of access to fiscal revenues have contributed to the economic deterioration. With recovery prospects remaining distant, households are suffering from increasing social and financial pressures, dues to different layers of crisis and resulting in rising food insecurity and vulnerability.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe economic contraction pushed poverty higher and reduced households purchasing power. With reduction in public sector salaries due to the fiscal constraints faced by the Palestinian Authority, households purchasing power has fallen significantly, resulting in some 34 percent of households in the West Bank now classifying as vulnerable or highly vulnerable to meet their basic essential needs.<\/li>\n<li>78 percent of households reported income declines and over 60 percent could not cover monthly expenses. Reliance on credit purchases has become widespread, further exposing households to financial fragility.<\/li>\n<li>Job losses escalated, especially for workers previously employed in Israel, leaving unemployment at very high levels; reaching 30 percent in the first quarter 2026 compared to September 2023.<\/li>\n<li>Food insecurity is growing, as reflected by a number of indicators:\n<ul>\n<li>The Food Consumption Score has seen an increase in the percentage of people with poor or borderline food security as diet quality and diversity declined; this has tripled rapidly from 5 percent of the population in June 2022, to 14 percent in late 2025.<\/li>\n<li>Households are increasingly resorting to severe negative consumption coping strategies, including reliance on less preferred and cheaper foods, reducing the number of daily meals, and limiting portion sizes; patterns clearly reflected in the Reduced Coping Strategies Index (rCSI).<\/li>\n<li>Emergency and crisis coping strategies escalated to affect nearly two\u2011thirds of households, undermining their ability to withstand future shocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The sharp deterioration of the West Bank\u2019s economy and household incomes since October 2023 has directly fueled rising food insecurity. Deep GDP contractions, soaring unemployment, wage delays, and collapsing consumption have eroded household resilience, leaving families unable to cover basic expenses. As poverty doubled and reliance on credit and negative coping strategies intensified, and nearly one\u2010third of households below the minimum expenditure basket and food insecurity surged. The convergence of economic decline and income loss underscores a deepening crisis where fragile livelihoods and shrinking purchasing power are driving widespread vulnerability. Amid the continued economic decline in the West Bank, exacerbated by the Palestinian government\u2019s inability to fully pay public employees, persistently high unemployment, and rising prices, particularly for fuel and cooking gas; the already fragile purchasing power has been further diminished.
