Humanitarian partners say that residential areas in the Gaza Strip continue to come under fire.

Over the past 24 hours, partners working on safety and security have reported civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure following air strikes, shelling and gunfire. Most of these incidents have been reported in the area where virtually all of Gaza’s 2.1 million people are confined, which is less than half of the Strip’s land.

In Deir al Balah on Monday, an air strike hit in the vicinity of a warehouse operated by a humanitarian partner, Ard El Insan. The strike destroyed the warehouse and damaged nutrition supplies stored inside. These supplies were intended for children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

Civilians and civilian objects, including humanitarian facilities, must always be protected.

Meanwhile, humanitarian partners continue to deliver life-saving assistance.

Over the past two weeks – between 10 and 23 August – partners leading on water, sanitation and hygiene distributed 65,000 kilograms of laundry detergent, 46,000 bars of soap, more than 4,000 adult diapers, 12,000 bottles of shampoo, 50 lice treatment kits, 1,760 hygiene kits and 77 baby kits.

Partners also distributed 1,000 latrine slabs – including 200 that are adapted for people with disabilities – about 300 household water containers, dozens of garbage bins, and 400 brooms, rakes and shovels. Twenty low-water-consumption mechanical washing machines were also distributed for communal use.

With support from humanitarian partners, Grade 12 students in Gaza – who missed the June examinations – have been able to sit for their final secondary school examinations for the first time since the onset of the hostilities. Partners provided equipment to the exam centres and printed the exam papers.

Some 9,000 girls and boys are sitting the in-person exams, which began on 15 August.

Meanwhile, during the second and third weeks of August, humanitarian partners distributed stationery kits and school bags to about 15,000 students attending seven secondary schools.
