The Meeting was convened under the auspices of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u00a0<\/span>Palestinian Rights Committee<\/span>. The Committee believes that efforts towards a peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict need to be grounded in international law and human rights in order to succeed. The tragic conflict in Gaza unfolding over this summer exposed protection gaps and underscored the necessity to hold perpetrators accountable. There is a large body of international law applicable to the Palestinian question. What is required now is to build a strong commitment by all stakeholders to ensure the implementation of applicable norms. Parliamentarians have a crucial role to play in this regard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Invited to the Meeting were parliamentarians and their umbrella organizations, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union; the United Nations Secretary-General, other high-level United Nations officials, diplomatic representatives of United Nations Members and Observers, other intergovernmental organizations, United Nations Agencies, representatives of civil society organizations (as observers), as well as the media. The Meeting provided an important opportunity for parliamentarians to convey the views and concerns of their constituencies to United Nations senior officials and to the United Nations membership at large.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>
