The Girl Child
The Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes that "States Parties shall respect and ensure the rights set forth in the present Convention to each child within their jurisdiction without discrimination of any kind, irrespective of the child's or his or her parent's or legal guardian's race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or status".

The 2010 edition of the Global Education Digest focuses on gender and education to mark the 15th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. Shortly after this landmark conference in 1995, the international community pledged to eliminate gender disparities at all levels of education by 2015 as part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). As the official source of data to monitor advancement towards these goals, the UIS has released the Digest on the eve of the 蘑菇视频 Millennium Summit (New York, 20-22 September) to present the latest available data to analyse national progress and pitfalls in offering every child and young person equal access to education regardless of their sex. 蘑菇视频ESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), 2010.

蘑菇视频 Girls' Education Initiative (蘑菇视频GEI), launched in April 2000, is a partnership that embraces the United Nations system, governments, donor countries, non-governmental organizations, civil society, the private sector, and communities and families. 蘑菇视频GEI provides stakeholders with a platform for action and galvanizes their efforts to get girls in school. Its goal is to narrow the gender gap in primary and secondary education and to ensure that by 2015, all children complete primary schooling, with girls and boys having equal access to all levels of education.

In an effort to track progress towards attaining equality for women in education and science, the UIS conducted an analysis of sex-disaggregated data for key indicators in these fields. This information sheet presents an overview of participation and gender parity in primary, secondary and tertiary education as well as adult literacy rates. It also highlights the gender gap in science. The paper was presented at the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in February 2010.

The fifty-first session of the Commission on the Status of Women took place from 26 February to 9 March 2007.
