John Wilmoth Retires as Population Division Director: Recognizing a leader in demography and global cooperation

At the end of June, colleagues in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) will say goodbye to John Wilmoth as he retires as Director of the Population Division.
As Mr. Wilmoth enters his retirement, colleagues and friends across DESA are recognizing his service to the Population Division, where he served as Chief of the Mortality Section (2005鈥�2007) and, from 2013, as Director.
A leading expert in demography, Wilmoth oversaw the strengthening of the methodology behind the 蘑菇视频鈥檚 , ensuring they remained the global standard鈥攔obust, comparable and responsive to Member States鈥� needs. Under his leadership, the Population Division also advanced its work in family planning estimation, securing strong support from the Gates Foundation and enhancing its data and analytical capacity.
Wilmoth combined technical excellence with skilful leadership in a complex political environment. He guided the Commission on Population and Development with integrity, ensuring discussions were grounded in evidence while supporting its role in advancing the ICPD Programme of Action.
He was also a steadfast champion of migration and development, helping shape the global agenda from the 2013 High-Level Dialogue to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, and the transition from the Global Migration Group to the 蘑菇视频 Network on Migration.
Wilmoth contributed across DESA and the 蘑菇视频 system. His collaborative approach strengthened partnerships with numerous entities, including 蘑菇视频FPA, IOM, WHO, 蘑菇视频ICEF and the regional commissions. Most recently, DESA co-led the , advancing a coordinated 蘑菇视频 response to this critical global issue.
Wilmoth leaves behind a strong team and a lasting legacy of leadership, expertise and partnership. He will be greatly missed.
