To mark International Women¡¯s Day, the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) has launched the annual report .
The report showcases the progress made on the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda in 2021.
Peacekeeping missions have supported women¡¯s full, equal, and meaningful participation in local conflict prevention, resolution, and peacebuilding efforts, as well as in political transitions, elections, and peace agreement implementation.
As data shows, in Mali, MINUSMA¡¯s support helped ensure more women are engaged in formal mechanisms at the national level, while in the Central African Republic, MINUSCA¡¯s support helped increase women¡¯s participation at the local level.
MINUSCA¡¯s support also contributed to more women being engaged in the legislative elections compared to previous elections.
In Cyprus, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵFICYP supported critical trust-building efforts led by women in civil society, and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, MONUSCO facilitated the drafting of a gender-responsive transition plan and ensured women¡¯s voices were at the centre of this process.
At Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters, DPO senior leadership prioritized the Women, Peace, and Security agenda and made sure women¡¯s voices shape the work of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ peacekeeping.
¡°I have made it my personal mission to champion this important cause and ensure gender and Women, Peace and Security are integrated and reinforced in all of our work,¡± writes Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, in the report.
Strategic communications were used to amplify women¡¯s work and voices, including through the In their Hands: Women Taking Ownership of Peace exhibition?currently at display at the Expo in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Nairobi (Kenya), Kinshasa (DRC), and Albee Square (New York).
With the prioritization of the WPS agenda in the Secretary-General¡¯s (2018), and the evolution of more nuanced WPS mandates for peacekeeping missions, DPO has redoubled its efforts to accelerate implementation and made WPS central to peacekeeping effectiveness.?.?
