10 March 2026 - Messenger of Peace Malala Yousafzai met with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Secretary General Ant¨®nio Guterres to discuss the lack of education access for girls and women in Afghanistan. ¡°During these troubled times, I¡¯m especially grateful for Malala¡¯s tireless advocacy for women and girls around the world, including in Afghanistan, where girls are banned from secondary school and women and girls have been systematically erased from public life¡±, said Ant¨®nio Guterres after the meeting.
Malala Yousafzai became an international symbol of the fight for girls¡¯ education after she was shot in 2012 for opposing Taliban restrictions on female education in her home country of Pakistan. Since then, she has been continuously using her voice in the fight for girls¡¯s education and was designated a Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Messenger of Peace in 2017.
