President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly travels to Geneva

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵITED NATIONS, New York, 6 December 2016 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, traveled to Geneva on 5 December 2016 to deliver the keynote address at the 107th meeting of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Council, on occasion of 65th Anniversary of the IOM.
During his one-day visit to Geneva, President Thomson also held meetings with the High Commissioner for Human Rights, H.E. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Roberto Azevêdo, and the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer.
During these meetings, the President stressed the importance of human rights in sustainable development and advocated for the universal teaching of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly to the world’s youth.
In his meeting with the WTO Director-General, the President stressed the importance of addressing fisheries subsidies that are harmful to the attainment of sustainable fish stocks.
President Thomson was accompanied to Geneva by the Office of the President of the General Assembly’s Chef de Cabinet Ambassador Tomas Anker Christensen and Director Kamal Amakrane. Travel expenses were covered by contributions to the OPGA Trust Fund, as well as by the IOM and the United Nations Office at Geneva (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOG).
