High Level Meeting on New Urban Agenda and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Habitat
On 21 October 2016, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Member States agreed upon the New Urban Agenda at the Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador. This Agenda sets a new global standard for sustainable urban development and will help us rethink how we plan, manage and live in cities.
To maintain momentum around the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and to reflect on the positioning of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Habitat in that regard, the President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ General Assembly convenes a two-day high-level meeting of the General Assembly on 5 and 6 September 2017.
The meeting will discuss best practices and success stories in relation to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. It will also address the measures contained in the Report from the Secretary General’s Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Habitat after Adoption of New Urban Agenda, which was published at the beginning of August 2017.

Format
The meeting will consist of an opening segment, panel discussions and a plenary debate. Member states will have an opportunity to engage with members of the Secretary General’s Independent Assessment Panel as well as representatives of local and municipal authorities, mayors, civil society, academia, members of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system.
Objectives
The two day High Level Meeting will seek to achieve the following:
- Generate ideas and build momentum to support implementation the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including by sharing best practices and success stories relating to the implementation
- Build a greater understanding of the recommendations contained in the Report from the Secretary General’s Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Habitat.

Habitat III Conference
Habitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development to take place inÌýQuito, Ecuador,Ìýfrom 17 – 20ÌýOctober 2016.
In Ìýand in line with the bi-decennial cycle (1976, 1996 and 2016), the United Nations General Assembly decided to convene the Habitat III Conference to reinvigorate the global commitment to sustainable urbanization, to focus on the implementation of a , building on theÌýÌýin 1996.
Member States of the General Assembly, inÌýÌý, decided that the objectives of the Conference are to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable urban development, assess accomplishments to date, address poverty and identify and address new and emerging challenges. The conference will result in a concise, focused, forward-looking and action-oriented outcome document.
On 22 December 2015 the United Nations General Assembly, on its seventieth session, adopted the , which refers to the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III Conference’s modalities. The approved rules of procedure for Habitat III recognise the participation of the representatives of local authorities accredited to the Conference in rule 64, as it happened in Habitat II in 1996.
