The President of the 72nd?session of the General Assembly,?H.E. Mr. Miroslav?Laj?ák, met today with the President of the United States of America, H.E. Mr. Donald J. Trump. They discussed United Nations reform, the Middle East peace process, migration, human rights, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), relations between the United States and the Russian Federation, and the problem of drugs, including opioids.
Mr.?Laj?ák?told Mr. Trump that they both agreed that the United Nations should focus on people and added that the United States’ support would be crucial in implementing United Nations reforms. On human rights, they discussed the work of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Regarding DPRK,?Mr.?Laj?ák?said that no country could ignore or resist a united international community.
On migration,?Mr.?Laj?ák?noted that the General Assembly had been tasked to finalise a global compact on safe, orderly, and regular migration by September 2018. This would be the first ever comprehensive international framework on migration, and its successful passage was important for the United Nations’ credibility. In that regard,?Mr.?Laj?ák?said he counted on the support of all Member States, including the United States, in meeting this ambitious goal.
