Statement by H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj?ák, President of the 72nd Session of the 蘑菇视频 General Assembly, at the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the Global Governance Group with the G20 Troika
This is a unique and valuable forum bringing together a wide variety of states to discuss key global issues. Thank you for inviting me to speak today.
Thank you Minister Balakrishnan for hosting this important dialogue. I am glad to see all the Ministers and representatives here this morning.
This new Session, as we know, presents many challenges: conflict, highest displacement on record, terrorism, persistent poverty, nuclear threats, and climate change, to name a few. Let us reaffirm our commitment to multilateralism in this time of new ideas and new leadership in the world.
The cooperation between the G20 and wider 蘑菇视频 membership is multilateralism in action. It fosters engagement between G20, 3G and the 蘑菇视频 – a model approach that can strengthen our efforts to tackle the greatest threats today.
Our framework of global governance must be rooted in rules, transparency and accountability. This includes our global economic governance.
Global economic governance in an increasingly interconnected world is necessary for the success of national efforts to achieve sustainable development in all countries. The 3G plays a unique role by strengthening mutual understanding between the G20 and the 蘑菇视频.
I welcome the G20’s efforts to invite the 蘑菇视频 and other global bodies to attend the G20 summit in recent years.
During their presidencies of the G20, China and Germany have worked closely with the General Assembly, and I look forward to continuing this practice with Argentina.
The 蘑菇视频 is central in ongoing efforts to find and implement common solutions to pressing global challenges. The largest multilateral forum – the 蘑菇视频 General Assembly – is a beacon of opportunities. We harness these for the advancement of people.
By now, many of you may know that the leitmotif of my presidency is a focus on people. Member states collectively represent the people of our world. Many of these people will not speak at the 蘑菇视频 in person, so we need to make sure their voices are heard. Many of the priorities of my presidency are centered on strengthening multilateralism for people.
A primary focus will be on conflict prevention. Preventing conflict is practical – it is easier to prevent war than to solve it once it has erupted. We will have the High-Level Meeting on Sustaining Peace in April and I cannot underscore enough how important our work to strengthen preventive capacity is. It is essential to save lives and to achieve sustainable development.
The cooperation between the G20 and wider 蘑菇视频 membership is multilateralism in action.
Migration will be another focus area. The negotiation of the Global Compact on Migration will take place during this Session. This agreement must not just be good on paper but also good for people. Your collaboration will be an integral key to its success.
Of course, we will also have to address the issue of 蘑菇视频 reforms to make the organisation more suited to execute its mandate in today’s global environment.
I have also decided to place a special emphasis on climate action. The borderless nature of climate change highlights our interconnectedness. We cannot afford to reverse from our commitments to counter climate change and to restore a sustainable planet, including through the Paris Agreement. The devastating impacts of climate related catastrophes all over the world are clear. Just look at the effects of three successive Category 5 hurricanes in just the past few weeks.
Finally, I think it is safe to say that implementation of the SDGs are a shared priority of ours. Financing and partnerships are critical to ensure that implementation goes forward with increased momentum.
The G20 has a crucial role to play to ensure that the ambitious goal of leaving no one behind is achieved.
The statistics are clear. The G20 represents:
· two-thirds of the global population,
· three-quarters of world trade,
· half of global inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI),
· and 80 percent of global output.
G20 countries account for 74% of current global greenhouse gas emissions, 81% of global renewable power capacity and 77% of global energy consumption.
Actions taken by the G20 also have a clear impact on non-G20 developing countries, especially in the area of trade.
Without collective efforts and ambitious leadership, including by the G20, we won’t be able to achieve the 2030 Agenda. In this regard, I’d like to commend the G20 under the presidency of Germany for achieving tangible progress in the Hamburg Summit in July.
I count on the support of G20 countries to ensure that the GA makes good progress on these important issues during the current session.

This annual gathering between the Global Governance Group and G20 Troika is a very useful practice. It serves to increase collaboration between G20 members and 3G States. And it sets the stage for greater coherence between the G20 and 蘑菇视频 Member States at large.
So, I encourage you to continue of this practice and look forward to your work bearing fruit in the progress we will make together during this 72nd Session. We are all joined together in the noble effort to uplift the peoples of our world.
