Kuwait, 17 January 2018 – The President of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj?ák, visited Kuwait yesterday to meet with Government officials.
In his encounter with H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, Mr. Laj?ák commended the Amir for his support to the United Nations and his generous leadership, especially in the area of humanitarian aid. He also gave an overview about his priorities, including migration, sustainable development and peace and conflict prevention.
The President also met with H.E. Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait. They discussed regional and global dynamics, including Kuwait’s role.
President Laj?ák also gave a lecture at the Kuwait Diplomatic Institute on the relationship between two of the main organs of the United Nations, the General Assembly and the Security Council; the priorities of his presidency for 2018; and the importance of multilateralism in today’s world.
In front of a packed auditorium, the President stressed the unique role of the General Assembly as a platform where all 193 Member States have equal voices, rights and responsibilities, regardless of size and wealth.
Before travelling to Doha, Qatar, to participate in a Regional Dialogue on Sustaining Peace, the President listened to views and ideas from Kuwait-based United Nations agencies.
