Prague, 26 March 2018 – The President of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Miroslav Laj?ák, was in Prague, Czech Republic, from 25 to 26 March.?
The primary purpose of his visit was to participate in the opening of the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Preparatory Meeting, entitled “Towards sustainable, resilient and inclusive societies through participation of all”. As part of a high-level debate panel at that gathering, he emphasized the importance of young people’s engagement in meeting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.?He also highlighted the need for participation from civil society and the private sector, in addition to Governments, in financing and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
While in Prague, the President also met with a number of officials from the Government of the Czech Republic.
In his meeting with H.E. Mr. Andrej Babi?, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, he discussed the Czech Republic’s presidency of ECOSOC, implementation and financing of the SDGs, conflict prevention and sustaining peace.
His meeting with H.E. Mr Martin Stropnick?, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, focused on multilateralism and migration.
President Laj?ák also met with H.E. Mr. Radek Vondrá?ek, President of the Czech Parliament’s Chamber of Deputies. They discussed a wide range of topics, including sustaining peace, sustainable development and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular migration.
Tonight, the President will travel to Brussels, Belgium, to meet officials from European institutions, the Belgian Government and the United Nations Country Team.
