INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL

President María Fernanda Espinosa calls on leaders and communities around the world to promote girls? empowerment and to support them to fulfill their potential through education, equal opportunities and gender equality. Yesterday in her meeting with a young community leader from the Philippines, Hannie Grace, who is 18 years old, President Espinosa talked about decent work and the need for girls to acquire the skills and training they will need to face the future job market.
The theme this year is “With Her: A Skilled GirlForce”

HURRICANE MICHAEL IN THE USA, FLOODS IN NIGERIA, TS蘑菇视频AMI IN INDONESIA

The President has been keeping a close watch on the progress of Hurricane Michael and the trail of havoc and destruction it has been leaving in its wake across the South East of the United States. She has been particularly saddened to learn of the two deaths, one in Florida, the other in Georgia. She also expressed deep sadness with the dramatic loss of life due floods which started mid-September in Nigeria. You will remember that early this month, the President of the General Assembly expressed her solidarity to victims of the earthquake and the tsunami on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.

And on the question about the elections for the Human Rights Council. The vote will take tomorrow, Friday 12 October, at the GA Hall. There are 18 vacancies and 18 candidates. The Group of African States has five vacant seats and five candidates; there are also five seats and five candidates for the Asia-Pacific States; two vacancies are available for the Eastern European States and this region has two candidates; Latin America and Caribbean also have three seats with three Member States running for it. Finally, we have the Group of Western European and other States with three vacant seats and three candidates. As mentioned, the election will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday at the GA Hall.

On her Agenda today: Ms. Espinosa is having bilateral meetings with the Ambassadors of Cyprus, Montenegro, Netherlands, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the President of ECOSOC and the Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed. Next week, we will resume a series of interviews with international media outlets.
