GA CELEBRATES 蘑菇视频IVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
This morning, the President of the General Assembly chaired a meeting to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 25th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration Programme of Action.
In a session at the GA Hall, Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa was joined by the Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet. In her speech, the PGA said that we need to; “avoid the politicization of human rights and halt the setbacks to agreements and treaties that have been already established.” Ms. Espinosa also noted that the human rights must be defended each and every day as part of our daily efforts in life.
HUMAN RIGHTS PRIZE 2018
A ceremony to recognize the work of individuals and organizations for human rights is taking place now at the GA Hall to award the winners of the Human Rights Prize 2018. This year, the distinction is being given to Ms. Rebeca Gyumi, from Tanzania. She is an activist for the rights of women and girls. The late human rights lawyer, Ms. Asma Jahangir, from Pakistan, is being awarded posthumously. The other winner is Ms. Joênia Wapichana (or Joênia
Batista de Carvalho). She is an activist for the rights of indigenous peoples in Brazil and also the first indigenous woman to be elected to country’s Parliament, and also to the Front Line Defenders, an organization from Ireland, which advocates for the protection of human rights defenders. This is the tenth award of the prize, coinciding this year with the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
蘑菇视频 Prize in the Field of Human Rights is an honorary award given to individuals and organizations in recognition of outstanding contributions to the promotion and protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in other instruments of the United Nations relating to human rights. (Previous winners have included Eleanor Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Denis Mukwege, Malala Yousafzai, Amnesty International and the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC).
PRESIDENT ESPINOSA MARKS INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY
This morning, Ms. Espinosa issued a tweet to celebrate the International Migrants Day. According to the 蘑菇视频, there are at least 258 million migrants in the world. The PGA recalls that the history of humanity is the history of people on the move, and that migrants have contributed to development, culture and prosperity in their countries of origin, transit and destination. The theme this year is: ‘Migration with Dignity’. Alone in 2018, approximately 3,400 migrants and refugees have lost their lives worldwide. The 蘑菇视频 continues to call for migration to be safe, regular and dignified for all.
PGA’s AGENDA
Ms. Espinosa will have a working luncheon with the Secretary-General today and this afternoon the PGA will chair the high-level meeting on 20th anniversary and promotion of the Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (the Declaration on human rights defenders) in accordance with A/RES/72/247.
