PGA SPEAKS AT NATIONAL DEFENSE COLLEGE IN OMAN
President María Fernanda Espinosa spoke earlier today at the National Defense College, in Oman, on “The Importance of Multilateralism and the Role of the 蘑菇视频 General Assembly in the Maintenance of International Peace and Security”.
The PGA recalled her experience as a former Defense Minister and Foreign Minister in her home country, Ecuador, to state that issues related to international affairs, human rights, development and defense must go hand-in-hand. Ms. Espinosa said that Oman has been a “strong supporter of multilateralism and an advocate for the use of diplomacy for peace”. She told participants that there is a necessity for a strong, multilateral approach to peace and security backed by the United Nations.
The PGA explained that the General Assembly has a crucial role to play in building and sustaining peace. From its practical responsibilities in relation to financing peace operations and reviewing the work of the Peacebuilding Commission, to ensuring that the voices of those affected by conflict are heard.
Before her lecture, Ms. Espinosa met H.E. Sheikh Khalid Hilal al Mawali, the leader of the Al Shoura Council, the lower house of the Omani Parliament, and the Minister of Defence, H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Saud al Busaidi.? The PGA expects to strengthen cooperation with the Government of Oman and the Omani people.
The PGA she will meet the Omani Women Association and have bilateral meetings with Omani authorities tomorrow, before she returns to New York.
