The President of the General Assembly has learned with great sorrow the news of the passing away of President of Tunisia, H.E. Beji Caid Essebsi.
Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa conveys her deepest condolences to his bereaved family, and to the people of Tunisia. Ms. Espinosa expresses her profound sympathy to Tunisia on this great loss.
President Beji Caid Essebsi played a key role in promoting the consolidation of political institutions and the rule of law in his country.
He was also a champion of gender equality.
The PGA hopes that his legacy will inspire many others and contribute to further strengthen unity and stability in Tunisia.

GA TO HOST HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS
The PGA has written to Member States to inform that she will convene a plenary high-level meeting to promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
The event is mandated by a GA resolution (72/51), which was adopted in December 2017.
The plenary meeting will take place on 9 September from 10 am. to 1 pm. at the GA Hall.
The objective is to enhance public awareness and education about the effects of nuclear weapons, nuclear tests and explosions and the need for their cessation towards a nuclear-weapon-free world.
Member States are invited to deliver remarks on the day.

MS. ESPINOSA CONGRATULATES H.E MS. MONA JUUL ON HER ELECTION AS THE NEW ECOSOC PRESIDENT
Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa has issued a tweet congratulating the Permanent Representative of Norway, H.E Ms. Mona Juul on her election to the Presidency of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Ms. Espinosa has commended Ambassador Juul for her tireless work?in?advancing?the 2030 Agenda on sustainable development, her excellent cooperation with the General Assembly and her strong commitment?tothe work of the United Nations.
The PGA looks forward to continuing to work with H.E. Ms. Mona Juul and to cooperate with her in her new capacity as the new ECOSOC President.
Ambassador Juul succeeds the Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, H.E Ms. Inga Rhonda King.
Ms. Espinosa congratulated Ambassador King on her outstanding leadership in the ECOSOC Presidency during the last term.
