COVID-19
The President of the 74th session of the General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande held several meetings this week related to ensuring business continuity in light of the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday the PGA held a meeting with the General Committee of the General Assembly.
On March 10 the PGA and the President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held a joint informal meeting to hear a briefing by the Secretariat regarding measures to strengthen preparedness and ensure business continuity at the United Nations in light of the evolving situation of the spread of COVID-19.
The PGA said that “No one is in any doubt that we are facing a global challenge which requires international cooperation. We will only tackle COVID-19 through a multilateral response. 蘑菇视频 must lead by example and take a coordinated and coherent approach making decisions of meetings and other activities.”
The PGA met with the Secretary General yesterday also to discuss the situation and ensure coordination.
The President sent a letter to Member States yesterday about a number of meetings scheduled for March and April. He strongly recommended several measures, among them:
Canceling side events. Scaling down the number of people at gatherings within the 蘑菇视频 premises. Encouraging Delegations to limit participation at meetings to no more than 2 New York-based delegates and holding meetings in larger rooms.
In his letter the PGA said that he decided to:
Postpone the Youth Plenary in preparation for the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the 蘑菇视频, scheduled for 31 March.
Suspend morning dialogues.
Not to go forward with the High-Level Interactive Panel on Anti-microbial resistance and the High-Level event to commemorate the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

Today the PGA tweeted: “We are in this together. Everyone can play a role in reducing the transmission of #COVD19.” He quoted WHO’s Director General Dr. Tedros as saying that this is a pandemic that can be controlled.
Revitalization
Today Mari Skaare the Chef de Cabinet of the Office of the President of the General Assembly spoke at the meeting of the Ad HOC working group on revitalization.
She said that this group can play a critical role in the success of the General Assembly. She added that “Important changes have been delivered through this Working Group in the past and it can again deliver important changes that will make the General Assembly stronger.”
She said that the United Nations is 75 years young, as the “world is changing, the challenges are changing, we do need an organization that is fit for purpose. This applies also to the General Assembly. We need to do things differently and better.”
