The President of the 76th?session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today?with the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe, H.E. Mrs. Marija?Pej?inovi?.
The Secretary-General?of the Council of Europe?presented the work of her organisation, rooted in close cooperation with the United Nations on the defense and promotion of Human Rights, as well as increasingly on issues related to environmental protection?and the implementation of SDGs.?
The President of the General Assembly noted the many convergences with the priorities of the 76th?session?identified in the Five Rays of?Hope.?Both agreed to step up?their?cooperation?over the year ahead, while stating that Human Rights cannot be sidelined.?Discussions also focused on the urgent need to?progress?on gender?parity and?in investing in youth and future generations.?
The Secretary-General invited the President to attend the upcoming Democracy Forum of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 8-9 November, which will focus on democracy and environmental protection.?
The meeting took place in the President’s office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
