The President of the seventy-sixth session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today in the United Nations Headquarters, with Ms. Patricia Espinosa, the Executive Secretary of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Framework Convention on Climate Change (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Climate Change).
Executive Secretary Espinosa expressed her support for the President of the General Assembly¡¯s priorities, particularly relating to responding to the needs of the planet and climate action. She outlined some of the ambition-raising initiatives undertaken in the lead up to COP26, and stressed the global imperative of achieving the 1.5 degrees target to secure a safe and prosperous future. She also committed Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵFCCC¡¯s support to the President¡¯s upcoming General Assembly meetings on climate action, and on the synergies between the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ¡¯s environmental agendas.
The President emphasised that achieving the goals of Presidency of Hope requires the General Assembly to mobilize political and popular will on climate action by fostering hope and confidence in all stakeholders¡¯ collective capacities to make an impact.
