The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Ms. Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, on 4 October 2021
Minister of State Al Hashimy thanked the President for accepting the invitation to participate in Expo2020 Dubai’s Climate and Biodiversity Week. She pledged the continued support of the United Arab Emirates to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including for the President’s priorities for the 76th session; agreed on the importance of keeping the United Nations Headquarters open for in-person diplomacy; and to strengthen the role of the General Assembly.? She also highlighted the United Arab Emirates’ prioritization of climate action, as evidenced by the country’s bid to host the 28th Conference of Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change in November 2023.
The President of the General Assembly thanked the Minister of State for the hospitality of the United Arab Emirates extended towards himself and his delegation, on his first overseas visit since assuming the Presidency. He congratulated the Minister of State and the UAE for hosting Expo2020, noting the synergies between its themes and those of his Presidency of Hope and of the need for greater international cooperation to end the COVID pandemic. H.E Mr. Shahid underlined the necessity of achieving vaccine equity by the end of 2022, as the first step to build back better from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The President took note of the UAE’s interest in hosting COP 28, and lauded the country’s regional and global leadership on climate action.
