The President of the 76th?session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met with Ambassador?Nazhat?Shameem Khan, President of the Human Rights Council.

The President of the Human Rights Council congratulated the President of the General Assembly on his election as well as on the successful hosting of the High-level Event on Climate Change held on 26 October,?which sent a powerful?message?ahead of the COP26. She also briefed the President of the General Assembly on the work of the HRC, particularly?on?recent?initiatives adopted by the Human Rights Council.?

The?PGA?congratulated Ambassador Shameem Khan on her outstanding work in steering the work of the HRC despite?the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic?and?thanked?her for?her participation as a panelist at the High-level event on?climate?change.

Both sides discussed also issues related to?the human rights dimension of?climate change, the importance of the continuity of the work of the HRC?and the impact on?human rights?as a result of the?COVID-19 pandemic,?especially on ?the most vulnerable populations.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
