Remarks by H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly

New York,

19 November 2021

?

Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you for inviting me to speak.

I welcome today’s discussion as an opportunity to provide an overview of the General Assembly’s role delivering “Our Common Agenda”.

First, some background:

During the 75th anniversary of the United Nations in 2020, Heads of State and Government adopted a Declaration mandating the Secretary-General to produce recommendations on how to best address shared global challenges.

Our Common Agenda?builds on many of the ideas that emerged during the year-long global?listening exercise conducted in the context of the 75th anniversary.?

More than 1.5 million people in all 193 Member States voiced strong public support for international cooperation, and a desire for more effective, more inclusive and more networked multilateralism in the future.

This Secretary General’s report synthesizes key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and offers suggestions on how to take them forward.

Approximately 90 recommendations of the report were designed based on the 12 commitments agreed to in the 蘑菇视频75 declaration.

They complement the achievement of development frameworks, such as the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

They propose to hold summit-level events focusing on our future and to establish new institutions that will focus more on youth.

There are many more such recommendations.

Our goal now must be to take these forward.

As President of the General Assembly, I have supported this process by convening two meetings for Member States to express their views on the report and its follow up.

As of 15 November, Member States have agreed on a consensus resolution to begin the follow-up process.

This resolution calls on me as President of the General Assembly, to hold consultations with Member States on the proposals, options, and potential means of implementation of this important document.

My view is that we can only deliver on the report’s ambitious proposals if the General Assembly works in unison to achieve them. ?

Dear friends,

I remain optimistic that shared solutions exist for common challenges.

We need to learn from the experiences, technologies, and know-how of our global community to achieve a common goal for our people and our planet.

Our welfare now depends on us working effectively together across borders and sectors.

Through a Presidency of Hope that focuses on delivering for the people, planet, and prosperity, be assured that I remain committed to the success of “Our Common Agenda”.

I thank you.

Throughout our disarmament efforts, it is my conviction that women and youth can make a meaningful contribution. Let us take special pains to ensure that women and youth, as well as civil society, are more actively engaged in this work going forward.
