The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with Mr. Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defense of Ireland.

They discussed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, and the role of the United Nations General Assembly in finding a way to establish political dialogue. They also discussed the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

Minister Coveney mentioned that the Irish government had an obligation to deliver on its climate commitments. In this context, the Minister also briefed the President on Ireland’s work with the SIDS in the South Pacific. He also underlined the issue of Climate and Security as a priority during the Irish tenure on the Security Council.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
