On 16 March 2022, the President of the 76th Session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid met with?H.E. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi.

President Chakwera, in?his capacity as Chairman of the United Nations Least Developed Countries (LDC) informed?President Shahid, on the existential threat faced by the Least Developed Countries, the Landlocked Developing Countries and the Small Island Developing States around the world. The President of Malawi expressed satisfaction with the role played by the General Assembly in prioritizing this important issue.

President Shahid commended President Chakwera on his leadership and work as Chair of the LDC’s and briefed him on some of the special events that he will be organizing that are in line with the LDC priorities during the rest of the 76th?session, notably tourism, debt sustainability and environment.

Both sides also discussed other relevant topics, such as multilateralism, ?climate change, recovery from COVID-19, and the African Union agenda for development: Agenda 2063.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
