The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid called on H.E. Dr. Alejandro Giammattei Falla, President of the Republic of Guatemala on 14 July 2022.

 

The President of Guatemala underscored that it is the first time that a President of the General Assembly has even visited the country, a historic opportunity that brings the U.N. closer to the field.

 

President?Shahid?thanked the President of Guatemala for the hospitality and congratulated the government’s commitment to multilateralism, including their invaluable contribution to peacekeeping operations.

 

President?Falla?underlined the vulnerability of Guatemala and the Central American region to climate change and the challenges it represents to their territory.

 

Both sides also discussed other relevant topics such as COVID-19 recovery, the migration crisis, climate change, environmental degradation, gender, the Ukraine crisis and its global implications.

 

Both sides?also?agreed that the Common Agenda -OCA- provides a roadmap for a U.N. that is more responsible and relevant to facing today?s challenges.

 

The meeting took place at the Presidential House, Guatemala City.
