I will now read the following short remarks on behalf of the President of the General Assembly:

Excellencies,

Regrettably once again, this General Assembly meeting is convened under the so-called ¡°veto initiative¡± ¨C as the divisions in the Security Council persist and hinder the Council¡¯s ability to effectively discharge its responsibilities.

I welcome the timely submission of the special report of the Security Council on the veto cast in the Council on 18 April 2024 ¨C reinforcing collaboration between the Security Council and the General Assembly, within their respective mandates and?in their shared duty to promote global peace and security.

In this regard, I encourage you to use today¡¯s discussion as an opportunity to deliberate on how the two main organs of the United Nations ¨C the General Assembly and the Security Council ¨C can work together to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian question.

The President of the General Assembly will continue the practice of providing a short summary of the plenary debate to the President of the Security Council.
