New York, 21 September 2025 ¨C?The High-level Plenary meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate the 80th??anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations?will take place Monday, 22 September from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters in New York.?
The event includes remarks by H.E. Ms. Annalena Baerbock, President of the General Assembly for its 80th session and H.E. Mr. Ant¨®nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations will also make a statement. Eminent speakers H.E. Ms. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Former President of Liberia and Nobel Prize Laureate, H.E. Ms. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Former Prime Minister of Norway, and Ms. Maria Ressa, Nobel Peace Laureate, will offer reflections on the role of the United Nations in peace and security, sustainable development and human rights. There will also be a poem recitation by Global Advocate for Peace, Ms. Maryam Bukar Hassan. ?
From the ashes of war
After two world wars and years of global economic depression, countries came together in 1945 to establish the United Nations. Since then, the Organization founded to ¡°save succeeding generations from the scourge of war¡± has helped to eradicate diseases, educate children, avert famine, lift millions of people out of poverty, support decolonization efforts, and much more. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system entities help develop international frameworks for everything from safe air travel to international postal regulation to GPS navigation to tsunami early warning systems, making a tangible difference in the lives of billions of people.? ????
Better Together
In her first address as President of the General Assembly, H.E. Ms. Annalena Baerbock said the 80th?anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and to strengthen it for the future.
¡°This is the year to adapt, to evolve, and to build the United Nations we need for the next 80 years, for the lifetimes of our children,¡± she said. ¡°It is a moment to show eight billion people why this Organization still matters, why they are right to look to the blue flag of the United Nations as a source of hope.¡±
The theme of her presidency is ¡®Better Together¡¯, stressing what can be achieved when shared goals are transformed into collective action to make the world a better place. ???
