It is a great pleasure to join you at this briefing session for the United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (蘑菇视频WGIC). On behalf of the United Nations, let me first express my gratitude to the Government of China. Let me also take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Natural Resources of China, and the Government of Zhejiang Province, for hosting the Congress in partnership with the United Nations and for their support to the Congress.
As you may know, this is the first time we convene such a 蘑菇视频 World Congress dedicated to the topic of geospatial information. With the overarching theme “The Geospatial Way to a Better World”, the Congress will be a truly global event bringing together all stakeholders at the highest level. The Congress will address and ensure that geospatial information has its widest and fullest utility in service of social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
This Congress is most timely, and carries with it some urgency. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is guided by a transformative vision. It is an inclusive and universal policy framework for improving the future of humankind and our planet. All countries own this Agenda and have committed to its 17 interlinked Sustainable Development Goals that strive to leave no one behind.
Indeed, there are challenges in implementing the 2030 Agenda. But there are also tremendous opportunities. The geospatial information community can meet the unprecedented need for more and new sources of data covering all countries and all aspects of development.
In this context, China has kindly offered to host this inaugural Congress, which will be a pace setting, forward-looking event. It will demonstrate how countries are able to link new, innovative and emerging geospatial technologies, capabilities and processes with the rapidly evolving data ecosystem. This will help address and overcome some of our biggest development challenges - from local to global.
The Congress will be multi-stakeholder and multi-industry. Representatives will debate and discuss technology developments, test concepts and thinking, stimulate dialogue, exchange experiences, practices and knowledge, all to help guide a path to a better world.
Successfully delivering such a milestone event is not possible without utilising key experiences from government and industry experts such as yourselves. Without your leadership we would not be where we are today.Distinguished Delegates and Colleagues,
I wish to assure you that DESA and the Secretariat for 蘑菇视频-GGIM in my Department, is fully committed to providing the overall coordination and organization of the Congress in consultation with the host, the Government of China. In particular, I thank the International Advisory Committee, which comprises high-level members from all stakeholder committees, for its hard work to design, organize and deliver the thematic sessions, meetings and activities for the Congress.
In November this year, the Congress will meet in Deqing, Zhejiang province. On behalf of the Congress organizer, I warmly welcome your participation to this unique global geospatial stage for all segments of the community – both in terms of the expertise of the many technology solutions and providers, and the large user and consumer community. I wish the United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress a resounding success.
