Winter School at Al Farabi KazNU discusses the risks of journalism profession
The Faculty of Journalism of the Kazakh National University held the 6th International Winter School for young journalists from Central Asian countries, including female media professionals from Afghanistan. The Winter School of Journalism and Communication was organized with the support of the Almaty Cluster Office of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Information Centre (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIC), Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵAI and Ban Ki-moon Institute for Sustainable Development.
This event, which took place on World Radio Day, was attended by journalists, media specialists and scholars from Canada, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Karakalpakstan and Kyrgyzstan. More thanÌý170 media scholars and journalistsÌýshared with students theÌýprofessional techniques of the media profession, the new trends in Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) and insights into the future of the media market.
American University of Greece uses education to bridge boundaries and change lives
The American College of Greece (ACG), working together with the U.S. Embassy in Athens, the American College of Thessaloniki/ACT and the American Farm School, launched the program Education Unites: From Camp to Campus providing higher education scholarships to 87 refugees.Ìý Scholarship recipients included 24 women and 63 men, ages 18 to 40, from 14 countries to help pay for their studies at ACG for the 2017 to 2018 academic year.
The primary goals of the program were to:
a) give opportunities to displaced students, many of whom are victims of wars or violence, to continue their education;
b) provide them with the knowledge, skills and academic credits they could then use in Greece or in any other European country they might move to in the future;
c) help them move beyond their identity as refugees and begin to be integrated in the local community; and
d) offer young men and women hope for the future and preparation for their professional lives.

The Sustainable Development Goals for a Local Community: Moving towards Global Change
As a United Nations Academic Impact ASPIRE member for over 8 years, the ASPIRE chapter of East Stroudsburg (Pennsylvania, USA) used their Sustainable Development Goal training received at the United Nations Headquarters for the enhancement of their local community. The month of February, designated to celebrate Black History Month in the United States, provided the ASPIRE Chapter of East Stroudsburg with the opportunity to work with leaders and partners in their community towards Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Ahfad University for Women conducts local and regional activities to promote gender equality and empower women and girls
In 2018, Ahfad University for Women's (AUW) Gender and Reproductive Health and Rights Resource and Advocacy Center (GRACe) conducted activities to promoteÌýSustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.Ìý
Throughout the year, training programmes were organized to prepare women and girls for leadership roles in the workplace.ÌýFor example,ÌýAUW's Student Union and GRACe celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child through their With Her: A Skilled Girl Force initiative that provided girls with the skills and training needed for joining the workforce. The programme also fostered collaboration and investments among stakeholders to increase employment opportunities for women and girls.Ìý

'Addiction is a disease, not a choice', Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC event highlights role of education in fighting stigma around drug use
30 January 2019 – A special event was hosted by the (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC) last Thursday, 24 January to spotlight the negative impact of stigma that surrounds drug addiction and the importance of education in the prevention of this growing problem.
The panel discussion Leaving No One Behind: the Drug Epidemic as a Global Health Challenge featured Mr. David Sheff, best-selling author of Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction; Ms. Vicky Cornell, co-founder of the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation; Dr. Nora D. Volkow, Director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse; and Dr. Gilberto Gerra, Chief of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵODC Drug Prevention and Health Branch.

17 January 2019 – Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a Model Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-New Silk Way roundtable discussion at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations in New York.ÌýÌý
The Model Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-New Silk Way Initiative provides master degree students from Al-Farabi Kazakh University with a 10-day academic exchange programme to enhance their understanding of peacebuilding, diplomacy and grow their awareness of the Security Council's role in the United Nations.ÌýThe roundtable discussion offered students the opportunity to present their viewpoints to Ambassador Kairat Umarov, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations.

'Education transforms lives' says Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief on first-ever International Day of Education
24 January 2019 -ÌýEducation transforms lives, United NationsÌýSecretary-General António Guterressaid, recounting his personal story of teaching in the slums of Lisbon where he saw first-hand that education is an engine for poverty eradication and a force for peace.
At the heart of the SDGs today, education serves as a basis for achieving the other goals, including reducing inequalities; improving health; achieving gender equality; fighting hate speech, xenophobia and intolerance; protecting the planet's resources and nurturing global citizenship.
Yet, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ chief flagged, at least 262 million children, adolescents and youth are out of school, most of them girls.Ìý Millions more who attend school are not mastering the basics.
Call for Submissions: Good Practices, Success Stories and Lessons Learned in SDG Implementation
23 January 2019 -ÌýÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ DESA) is launching a call for submissions of good practices, success stories and lessons learned in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
Governments, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ entities, international and regional organizations, Major Groups and other Stakeholders are invited to submit contributions from 1 November 2018 to 28 February 2019, using a dedicated web-based portal.
