The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met with H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change on Tuesday 5 October, 2021.
Minister Al Jaber pledged the continued support of the United Arab Emirates to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including for President Shahid’s upcoming high-level General Assembly meeting on Climate Action on 26 October. He stressed that the UAE would harness its 15 years of experience in renewable energy to support global efforts on climate action, including financing, knowledge transfer and new technologies, and to demonstrate that the Gulf region has much to offer by way of solutions. He also highlighted the United Arab Emirates’ prioritization of climate action, as evidenced by the country’s bid to host the 28th Conference of Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change in November 2023
H.E. Mr. Shahid thanked Minister Al Jaber for the hospitality of the United Arab Emirates extended towards himself and his delegation, on his first overseas visit since assuming the Presidency. He congratulated the UAE for hosting Expo2020, noting the synergies between its themes and those of his Presidency of Hope and of the need for greater international cooperation to end the COVID pandemic. H.E Mr. Shahid underlined the necessity of achieving vaccine equity by the end of 2022, as the first step to build back better from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The President took note of the UAE’s interest in hosting COP 28, and lauded the country’s regional and global leadership on climate action.
