Major sporting events have the power to captivate and unite large audiences, creating vibrant connections between fans, the sports industry, and host cities. Given the large crowds they attract, these events also present significant security challenges. Major sports events require seamless operating environments at national and host-city levels, ensuring that every aspect of the experience of athletes, federations' staffs, spectators and tourists is safe and secure. Security and coordination must cover the entire fan journey—from digital platforms and transport to public spaces.
The CTWeek side event will provide an opportunity to share lessons learned from recent initiatives, including the 'Road to Budapest' initiative and the 2026 UEFA Champions League Final while also drawing on insights from ongoing preparations for upcoming major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The discussion will bring together past and future organizers to highlight international good practices in safety, security protocols and inter-agency coordination. The goal is to identify actionable lessons and strategic priorities to:
- Enhance athletes, spectators and tourist safety through international awareness-raising and dissemination of proven successful practices;
- Strengthen international cooperation among Member States and relevant stakeholders, leveraging the momentum created by major sports events;
- Strengthen the shared understanding of risks across host cities and venues;
- Promote integrated and coordinated approaches to operational security, including crowd control, surveillance, and emergency response;
- Facilitate cross-border Cooperation to address transnational threats affecting major sporting events
